Dalzell Estate is a large country estate located in Motherwell to the south of the town, on the north bank of the River Clyde. The estate covers an area of approximately 200 hectares (500 acres) and includes a variety of different habitats, including woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, and a historic mansion house.
The history of Dalzell Estate dates back to the 13th century, when it was granted to the Dalzell family by King Robert the Bruce. The Dalzells were a powerful family who played an important role in Scottish history, and they owned the estate for over 400 years. In the 17th century, the Dalzells built a new mansion house on the site, which was later extended and improved by subsequent generations of the family.
In the 19th century, the Dalzell Estate was sold to the Hamilton family, who owned it until the mid-20th century. The Hamiltons made a number of changes to the estate, including the construction of a Japanese garden and an arboretum. In the 1960s, the estate was purchased by North Lanarkshire Council, who have since managed it as a public park.
Today, Dalzell Estate is a popular destination for visitors of all ages. The estate offers a variety of activities, including walking, cycling, fishing, and birdwatching. There are also a number of historical buildings and features to explore, including the Dalzell House, the Japanese Garden, and the arboretum.
